The first person to have seen Lincoln’s ghost was First Lady Grace Coolidge, She is said to have seen Lincoln staring out of the window of Yellow Room of the White House, which Lincoln used as meeting room during his administration. He said he was in great distress when the encounter occurred during days of Vietnam War, Johnson said he asked Lincoln “How he handled an unpopular war?” to which Lincoln replied “Don’t go to the theater.” Lyndon Johnson was claimed to have spoken to Lincoln’s spirit. However, according to Lamon, Lincoln never took these dreams seriously and presented them in a “playful manner with humor”. Lincoln said he didn’t slept the night after he saw that dream and it has annoyed him ever since. Few days later, On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth at the Ford’s theater and after his death, his body was laid in the same East Room of the White House. He then woke up after a huge burst of grief from the crowd. Lamon wrote that Lincoln said he, himself didn’t see the face of corpse because it was covered. He went out of the room to see but found no one until he walked into the East Room of the White House to find a corpse guarded by soldiers and a crowd of people, crying and gazing at the corpse, Lincoln asked a soldier “Who is dead in the White House?”, the soldier replied “The President. In that dream, according to Lamon’s account, Lincoln told that he woke up to sound of some people crying and sobbing. ![]() In 1863, Lincoln wrote a letter to his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, who was living in Philadelphia with their 10 year old son, Tad, to “put Tad’s pistol away” because he had an “ugly dream about him”.Īccording to his friend, law partner and bodyguard, Ward Hill Lamon, just few days before his assassination, Lincoln shared a dream with a small group that included Mary Todd and Lamon. Lincoln often shared his dreams with his friends and was curious to know what they had to say about future events.
